We have direct evidence of the extent of the Maurya empire thanks to the edicts of Aśoka, Candragupta’s grandson.

The Arthaśāstra, then, may not be a reliable source for finding out the way in which Candragupta’s empire was run. If my earlier reflections are right, it is rather an expression of the Brahmanical reaction against the political changes his empire had brought about.
